The secret to making great pasta sauce follows the same theory as making great dance music; build a simple foundation using high-quality ingredients and characterise it with an original touch.
According to Bot, one half of the Italian DJ duo Crookers, creating the perfect sauce is much like creating the perfect track. The complexity of the recipe isn’t important – it’s the quality of the ingredients that have an impact.
“It’s really the little things that make a big difference,” Bot explains to NovaNation, on the phone from his London apartment. “It might sound boring but I enjoy cooking a really simple pasta with tomato sauce the most.
“The most important thing with Italian food is the quality of the ingredients. You should start with a good basis of really nice tomato sauce, and good olive oil, which is not easy to find. If you start from that, it’s easy.
“I’m up for super-complicated music but what’s really difficult is keeping it simple while still being good and original. If you can achieve that, it’s like, wow.”
Crookers, best known for their recent dancefloor anthem remix of Kid Cudi’s “Day'N'Nite,” have just released their debut album Tons of Friends with tracks that feature a host of massive artists including Pitbull, Will.I.Am, Spank Rock, Miike Snow and more.
Scheduled to head Down Under for Australia’s massive June dance events, Winter Sound System and We Love Sounds, Bot says the pair’s been lucky to get radio play and international recognition – but they’re not a duo that plans on resting on its laurels.
“We are always working on new material, we can’t (resist). We’re always mixing beats and trying to make new tracks. This type of music is about the sound, and about trying to find new sounds.
“One thing that characterises us is that we don’t really think about how the track is going to be before we do it. It’s more spontaneous, in a way, and sometimes it ends up being a bad song or just bulls**t but most of the time it’s a good approach which works for us.”
Crookers will be joining a strong selection of electro acts on this year’s bill including the likes of Steve Aoki, Markis Schulz, Tiga, Laidback Luke and many more artists.
Bot says it’s a privilege to be hitting Aussie crowds alongside this year’s stellar line-up. “We are really happy because we know a lot of people who are playing there and that’s important because if you’re travelling with friends it makes everything much easier and much more fun.”
Crookers' Tons of Friends is in stores now.
