While plenty of artist collaborations flop disastrously, some musicians get very lucky and find near-magical unions with unexpected musical partners.
Former Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland and French DJ king David Guetta fall into that 'special' category.
Hot off the heels of unleashing their second combined effort “Commander," Rowland chats exclusively to NovaNation about the hot new track.
The very down-to-earth and relaxed singer explains that she and Guetta share an electric musical chemistry.
“When David and I met it was very organic – and when you get a good one, you just get a good one,” Rowland explains, smiling.
“Nelly and I got a good one years ago, and David and I got a good one most recently. The formula for us working together really works and he’s definitely featured on the new record and I’m so happy about that.”
The pair’s chemistry is so strong, in fact, that it extends outside of the studio and onto the dancefloor.
Rowland laughs as she recalls a wild night in France that sparked their first collaboration, the Grammy-Award winning track “When Love Takes Over.”
“We go hard. I remember once in the south of France – it was morning time when I left to go to the club so it was about 1am and I didn’t get home till almost 9 o’clock.
“I had so much fun and lost track of time – and that’s when we completely lose ourselves and just get wrapped up in the music. That’s when something really special takes place… And that’s when I heard “When Love Takes Over.”
“I wanted to recreate that moment – that I honesty experienced for the first time in my whole life.”
Continuing to explore themes of freedom, and partying, Rowland explains why “Commander” – the first single off her upcoming album – is a personal favourite.
“One of the things I love about “Commander” is that it’s so sassy and sexy and fun, above everything,” she says.
“Everybody is a commander and everybody should dance and free themselves of whatever it is they’re going through that day, or week, or whatever. It’s just about dancing and having fun and living. I love it – loooove it.”
Rowland rose to fame as part of the world’s biggest selling female trio of all time, Destiny’s Child. Between her former group and her two solo records, Rowland has sold more than 60 million records worldwide.
She says dabbling in wild collaborations with Guetta, and steering her career in a far more dance-oriented direction than ever before have both been giant but rewarding steps.
“With the team that I have, I feel like everybody is so excited about that direction of music and they’re all ready to take that risk with me – because it is a risk. When you want to try something new it’s definitely taking a risk,” Rowland says.
“I’m very proud of myself and where I am in my career. I’m constantly learning different things and trying out different things (like) working with David…
“It’s going to be a big year ahead. With the material I’ve been working on in the studio, I feel like I’ve finally carved out my niche when it come to dance music and urban, and putting those two together.”
