While the saints of Brisbane's Mud Army were still hard at it cleaning sludge from the river city, a few hundred hardcore sinners took a break from reality with a dose of Divided featuring Tokyo's Kazu Kimura at Barsoma.
What a surreal night. On the outside, the city was aching... but in here, temporary amnesia led us right into the heartland of Trance, Techno, House and Minimal. For one night, post-flood, we were let off the hook to go off the hook, and that’s the best way to describe Barsoma on Saturday.
Briz club heavyweight Tranceducer did what he does best luring bodies onto the d floor with a wicked set of trance, tech-house and some darker progressive house. The mood was already elevated well above flood level.
Then Kazu Kimura took over and it was ‘all over’ (if your plan was to just sit on a couch and recover). No peace for the wicked after a day of intense volunteering on the frontlines. No way! The Kazu boot camp took no prisoners as he punched out a muscle-fatiguing two hour set. Too bad if we were shocked and shagged, industrial funk and the occasional Detroit techno classic kept us ‘volunteering’ the last reserves left in the tank to a very worthy cause – lifting Brissie spirits out of the mud for a few sweet hours of much needed escapism.
It was a mind-blowing techno set and despite our aching bodies, we needed no relief.
Digital Divide closed with a set of heavy hitting, melodic techno and progressive til five in the morning.. which is when it ‘dawned’. This was the new day and we now had to face the music. Time to soldier back to reality, and the whole dirty truth.
Was it sinful to tune it all out for the night, while Brisbane was sleepless and hurting? Or is it actually doing more good to get back out there, spend money, and keep club nights like this alive and kicking? My Life of Sin says HELL YEH to the latter. Get out there. Dance like you JUST DON'T CARE, (cos that just shows that you really do).
