Electronic band The xx has taken home Britain's most prestigious music award, the Mercury Prize for the debut album, The xx.
The album, which was named NME's #2 album of 2009, was recorded in a small garage at their record label's studios.
"We've had the most incredible year," XX frontman Oliver Sim said of the win. "It feels like every day we wake up to something incredible. It hasn't sunken in to be honest.
"I don't know what we were expecting but we weren't expecting this."
The band beat out hugely successful releases from artists including Dizzee Rascal, Paul Weller and Mumford & Sons.
The award, which honors the best album released in the past 12 months, comes with a cool AUD $33,000 in prize money.
