The Presets are arguably the biggest success story of an aussie band breaking from the underground world of electronica, to hitting the mainstream for the past few years.
Both hailing from Sydney and meeting as students of Sydney's Conservatorium of Music, Julian Hamilton (keyboard and vocals) and Kimberly Moyes (drums and keyboard) found a combined love of the dark side of electronic music, all while studying classical music. It was this shared love that found them become part of the band Prop making several albums of experimental instrumental music. It was only when they wanted to try something edgier that The Presets were born.
Signed to the influential and genre-bending label that is Modular, The Presets released a couple of EP's prior to 2005's debut album Beams, which featured the song Are You The One? With the UK picking up on the electro-rock-fused anthem (hand claps included), and the US featuring the song Girl And The Sea in the hit TV show The OC, things were starting to come together for the guys. So much so that they started touring as support for the likes of Daft Punk, 2 Many DJ’s and Ladytron.
Their second album, Apocalypso, has been their ticket to commercial success as well as being a critical hit, featuring the hit songs My People, This Boy's In Love, Talk Like That, Yippyo-ay, and If I Know You. It was no wonder then that Julian and Kim dominated the 2008 Australian music awards, winning the ARIA Awards for “Album of the Year”, "Best Group", “Best Dance Release”, "Best Producer","Best Video" and "Best Cover Art".
